What’s the life duration of external hard drives (for lap tops)?
is it true that overheating causes it to crash for good? explain to me what can damage it, I dont want to buy one then it just loses all of my important files.

Wrong area, but hard drive are delicate, you have multiple spinning platters. Overheating for an external drive? I wouldn’t worry about that.
I have multiple external drives and never had any issues with them, from desktop(3.5) drives, to small laptop external drives.
If you buy one, just don’t drop it or abuse it. It’s also smart to back your really important data on DVDs for archiving, that’s standard.
